BCoPD PC7 Community Message 5/12/25

Community Message from BCoPD Precinct 7 – 5/12/25

Last week one of our community members experienced what we would consider to be a “Deception Burglary.” One of the best defenses against this type of crime is educating our communities about what to look for so they might be able to stop one before it happens. The following message was posted to our Precinct 7 Nextdoor page. Please send or share with anyone that may not have access to social media or that may be more likely to be a victim of one of these crimes.

Precinct 7 is asking our residents to be aware of the signs of a deception burglary. In these incidents, suspects pose as utility workers, contractors, or other officials to gain access to a resident’s home and distract the occupant while an accomplice enters to steal valuables.

What to Watch For:

-Individuals claiming to be from utility companies (water, electric, gas) without proper identification.

-Unscheduled or unexpected visits from workers claiming they need to inspect your property or check for issues inside your home.

-Distractions such as asking you to step outside or assist them in the backyard while another person enters your home.

How to Protect Yourself:

-Do not let unknown individuals into your home unless you have verified their identity.

-Always ask for official identification and call the company or agency they claim to represent.

-Keep doors locked, even when you are at home. -Do not allow anyone to distract you or lure you away from your front door if you did not request service.

If You Suspect a Deception Burglary:

-Call 911 immediately.

-Try to note a description of the individuals and any vehicles involved.

-Do not confront the suspects.

Your vigilance is critical in helping us prevent these crimes. Please share this information with elderly relatives, neighbors, or others who may be more vulnerable to these scams.

As always, thanks for your cooperation and efforts as we try to improve the safety of our communities together.
